Un-F-ing-Believable

Or believable. It’s hard to say.

It finally happened. I’ve been saying it for ages- and if you haven’t been following the saga, just click “raw milk” under the categories over there on the right. Essentially, to catch you up, this is what’s been going on: those of us who choose to drink our milk unpasteurized, fresh, and straight from the cow, are prosecuted by the federal and most state governments. It is illegal to sell unpasteurized milk for human consumption across state lines, it is illegal to sell period in Maryland and many other states. And when we get creative and get around the sales thing by joining clubs, to which we pay membership fees, the benefit of which is beautiful fresh milk, we get prosecuted. Our farmer in Pennsylvania has an outstanding case with the FDA, at the moment, after the FDA raided our farm back in April. They haven’t moved forward on that one yet, but it’s only a matter of time.

And now people have been arrested. Two farmers and the organizer of a food club in Venice, California, were arrested yesterday by FDA agents and police officers.

They were arrested on 13 counts, including four criminal conspiracy counts.

The irony, of course, is that the FDA had undercover agents investigating the club for the past year, becoming members under aliases and picking up fresh milk and other products- just like they did with our club.

In case you didn’t pick up on it, this is the same club that got raided a year ago, and made it onto the Colbert Report. The one where they held up the volunteers at gun point and frisked them? The thing of it is, this has moved past protesting and whining and complaining on the internet. PEOPLE HAVE BEEN ARRESTED. For consuming the foods of their choice, and for helping others to have access to those foods. FARMERS HAVE BEEN ARRESTED. For providing people with the foods they CHOOSE to eat. No one has been made ill. NOT A SINGLE PERSON. This is not a bunch of crazy hippies, or crazy tea partiers, or whatever you want to imagine. This is normal people, who have decided they would prefer not to eat the contaminated industrial foods available at the store, thanks very much. Because you know what else happened this week? There was an antibiotic resistant salmonella outbreak on ground turkey put out by Cargill. They finally issued a recall and 76 people have been made sick so far, with one death. Did the FDA shut down Cargill? Nope. The recall was voluntary, after months of allowing the tainted meat to stay on the market.

This is outrageous. Big industrial meat packers get a free pass to KILL people, and small scale goat farmers (40 goats, really) who offer milk to members of a private club get thrown in jail. If you still, somehow, absurdly, believe we live in a free country you are completely delusional. Because now it’s not only persecution. Now we’re at war.
